Episcopal school offers nearly $9,000 in aid for Haiti

2/9/2010

Faculty, students and parents of St. Martin’s Episcopal School in Atlanta have raised $8,678 to support recovery work in Haiti. Their gift was directed toEpiscopal Relief and Development for distribution.

One student gave all of her savings to the cause—more than $400. Her parents were so pleased with her decision that they donated $1,000 more, said Chaplain Edith Woodling, adding that another middle-school student gave a $100 bill given to her at Christmas.  Younger children emptied their piggy banks.

“This was a wonderful event for our school community to learn about Haiti and how we could help,” said Woodling.  The funds collected during the offertory during a chapel service, offered “to the glory of God and for our brothers and sisters in Haiti.  Funds were forwarded to the main office of ERD.

The school’s Service Learning Committee will continue to monitor the needs as they are articulated through ERD and will join with the St. Martin’s congregation in the spring for a yearend project, she said.
