Calling the Spirit: Music in Liturgy Session 3
Does music in your parish need a boost? Is there a tension of musical values on Sundays? Ever wonder why music choices are the way they are? Is the musical activity at your parish the reason you have chosen the Episcopal Church? Come join us for a discussion of why, what, when, who and the future of musical style in the church and in your parish.
The Rev. Dr. Raymond M. Gotko, priest, pianist, composer, arranger, member of the Commission on Music, now retired, has served both small and large parishes in the Diocese of Atlanta.
Planned Spontaneity Session 1
This workshop is open to anyone who loves music and desires to ‘create’ music on the spot. Games, resources and easy-to-use pathways will be introduced to free up everyone’s pent-up creativity. Improvisation was once a part of every musician’s training and for thousands of years, the way music was created and shared. Bach, Handel, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Brahms, amd Lizst were all widely known as improvisers in their day. Jazz and folk musicians move freely in the improviser’s world.
Currently, classically trained musicians are re-discovering that improvisation is an essential element in comprehensive musicianship. In this workshop, the power and potential of music as an immediate living language and means of communication will be shared via stimulating music-based games and materials that evoke innate creativity on every level, from beginners to advanced performers. Ways and means to create music, using resources you already possess either intrinsically or at your fingertips will be shared. Resources will include materials gathered by presenters and from the Leadership Program for Musicians.
Ms. Joanne Cobb Browne, Director of Music/Organist, Good Shepherd, Covington; Faculty/Co-Coordinator, LPM Atlanta, and Ms. Sue Mitchell-Wallace, LP Mboard, composer, member of St. David's in Roswell and free-lance organist, choir director.

This workshop, designed for professional church musicians, clergy, and adult choristers, will offer an introduction to a wide diversity of liturgical music and choral anthems that represent styles including jazz, gospel, and Negro Spirituals, as well as Anglican chant and traditional English anthems. If you are interested in a diverse and growing parish, this workshop is for you.
