Christian Formation
Being Human Session 2
Many have acknowledged that stories are an essential part of being human. As Christians, we are called to tell stories that are infused and alive with the presence of God. We are to be hearers and bearers of story, tasks that require courage, imagination, and the ability to be quiet. Caroline Westerhoff will discuss her approach to the writing of story and will read several excerpts for class reflection. Caroline Westerhoff, retired Canon for Ministry in the Diocese of Atlanta. Serving the Diocese for nearly 25 years, Caroline worked with four bishops in a variety of capacities, including Director of Camp Mikell, Director of the Discernment Process, and parish consultant. She is the author of four published books.
Childhood Spirituality – What does that have to do with me? Session 1
If you work in children’s ministry the answer may seem quite clear; but what if you don’t? Does it matter? Come explore the concept of the spirituality of the child as defined by psychologist Rebecca Nye in her book Children’s Spirituality; What It Is and Why It Matters, 2009. We will explore Nye’s definition of spirituality as “relational consciousness” and look at the impact it has on us as adults leading a Christian life. How do childhood experiences of spirituality and the interactions of children with adults impact one’s spiritual journey? Increase your awareness of the impact we have on the lives of the children in our midst and change the future of the Church. Christen Erskine is Director for Children’s Formation at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, Atlanta and a Certified Godly Play® Trainer. She is currently working on a Certificate in the Spiritual Guidance of Children at General Theological Seminary in New York
Christian Formation Session 1
“Formation” may be the current word to describe the educational ministry of the church, but few are clear or agree on what it means, how you engage in it, how you plan to be intentional about it and how to evaluate its effectiveness. That will be the subject of this lecture and discussion. Dr. John Westerhoff, retired priest, one time professor of theology and Christian nurture at Duke University and author of “Will Our Children Have Faith”
Ways to Encourage Deep Wondering Session 2
Wondering is a way to open oneself to the creative process with God in order to make meaning in this world. Whether you facilitate a Godly Play® circle of children, or use another curriculum with children, youth, or adults, you are invited to come explore the practice of wondering. What does it take to create a safe place for wondering? How do we as leaders enable or block the wondering response of those we lead? I wonder what deep wondering creates for children, youth, and adults. Christen Erskine is Director for Children’s Formation at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, Atlanta and a Certified Godly Play® Trainer. She is currently working on a Certificate in the Spiritual Guidance of Children at General Theological Seminary in New York
What Does it Mean to be a Holistic Christian? Session 3
Throughout the Gospels, Jesus says of his mission that he “came that they may have life and have it abundantly” (John 10:10b). The lawyer in the Gospel of Luke tests Jesus by asking how he can inherit eternal life and Jesus asks him what is written in the law: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” (Luke 10:25-27). As Christians, we are called to live into that abundance of life but how do we do that? What does it mean to be a holistic Christian and what do we need to keep in mind as we coordinate formation for all ages? We will explore and discuss formation in the Christian life as a lifelong, holistic experience. The Rt. Rev. Keith Whitmore, Assistant Bishop of Atlanta and Karen Maxwell, Chair of the Commission on Christian Faith Formation and Director of Formation for the National Association of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd
